what are the relays for 250sl
« on: April 18, 2006, 20:30:47 »
Can anyone identify the different relays? By the cold start switch there is one on the inner fender well. There are 3 in a row on the other fender well by the windshield washer reservoir. Are they the same part number? I bought a new cold start relay. It's a bosch, and it looks like at least 2 of the relays look like the same. I'm not sure which one is which!

Hey Rmmchl. I often refer to this thread from P113. There are some photos that are very helpful.

The relays are a little different from those at the  site posted due to some circuit changes in the 250 model.
For the 250, they did away with the 2 sec time relay  circuit of the 230[ which was later re-introduced as a hot start modification kit] in favor of seperate relays for CSV and FI pump enrichment solonoid.
So. on the drivers side , the front relay will power the CSV on the intake.
The next one back will power the rack solinoid on the FI pump. These relays are inter-changeable.
The 3rd one is WW motor power.
The relay  looking can you mention on the passenger side wall should be the Voltage Regulator.

Hi Michael,

I have a 1968 250SL with the same setup as yours.  From the firewall and forward:  Relay for wipers; Relay for Starting solenoid on the back in injector pump; Relay for solenoid on cold starting valve (identical to the relay for the Starting solenoid -- both 4 prong relays).

Additionally, the 1968 USA models have a relay for the Fuel Shutoff solenoid and it is typically located behind the battery and above the coil.  It appears to be the same as the other fuel related solenoids but may be a five prong relay for all I know.

On the right side fender well, near the expansion tank, is the Voltage Regulator (metallic finsh).  Although larger than relays...it is often mistaken for a relay.

Sorry about that. I forgot they messed with perfection when the 250SL came out!  :)  Hopefully, the link will help at least a few owners out there.

True.. Many guys use the 230 two sec relay on the later models , and the ones that don't get around it by adding a cabin manual push switch. So that site is valid info for all models.
The later modification kit used one to remedy the heat soak/hot start problems too.
No matter which system [ there were four versions] , the CSV is  still the main starting aid and they seem to work best with the earlier 2 sec relay circuit on all versions.

Hi James,
As a fellow 230 guy (old school pagoda?) I bookmarked that thread.  I had missed it before.  I also missed that you drive a '63! Very early.  have you compared VIN's with others here?  We'll have to find a Sinclair Gasoline sign (with the dinosaur) for the oldest Pagoda.

Hey Pete. I'm afraid I don't win the award. Mine is number 871 but there are a couple earlier here. Paul S. comes to mind, and also Dougmarti. But I enjoy having an early one - lots of features that later ones did away with. Cheers.
