speedometer problem
« on: April 16, 2006, 18:52:03 »
one of my winter projects was to service my speedometer.

- palo alto in california did a service and I bought a new speedo cable and new light bulbs.

- it was possible to go through the right side (with a long arm trough the glove compartment to disamble and get everything back again.

- to fix the speedo cable at the tranny was quite difficult.

- now as I put everything back in again, the speedo pin (or do you call it needle?) doesn't move at all

- where would you start to search for errors?

- at the tranny, the other end of the cable at the instrument?

- is there any way to test?

- the milometer (milage counter) works perfect, both scales

Happy Easter Everybody!  After a huge Easter party with kids and such and mucho champagne I can only give you basic advice.  The first thing I thought was that you didn't connect the cable to the speedo correctly.  However, you said that the milage counter is working.  That would suggest that it is connected to the speedo, however the internal gears in the speedo are not working or worn out.

When I had this done to my speedo I had to have a guy put in new cogs/sprockets.  I never saw what he did but he said that he just replaced plastic sprockets.

I would suggest that you fiddle with the speedo connection. Unplug then plug in back in.  Then let us know.

I would hope it is just a misalignment.  Good luck.

Hello Roman,

Sounds like you may not have made the connection at the tranmission.

If you end up taking the speedometer out again, before you send it back, go for a test drive and see if the end of the cable turns!

I would not suspect the tranny connection if the Odometer is working fine..
If that is working, the problem is in the Speedo head unit.

Roman,
This is a late entry but, as you are well aware there is only one cable that goes into the speedometer. If the mileage indicator is working the cable must be operating properly. I believe Palo Alto is to blame for this problem and I hope they complete the repair of your speedometer quickly.
I am anxiously awaiting the return of my clock from Palo Alto. If I have any problems with it I wil be sure to share the news with the group.
Best regards,
