New Factory Dash Wood
« on: May 30, 2006, 16:24:57 »
Hello,

A friend of mine just ordered and recieved new dash wood for his W113 Mercedes from the local Mercedes Dealer. I thought some of you might want to see the color and finish of the factory new wood.

I believe the actual type of finish has changed from the original and the color may be slightly different. It is very close and looks very nice. It is a dark color, maybe not quite as dark as the older wood. It has a low sheen finish. It is not a glassy smooth finish like the newer Mercedes cars. Some grain texture from the wood has been allowed to show. I believe this to be correct also.

The price was quite reasonable compared to what wood restorers charge for restoring original wood sets.

Unfortunately a recent price increases by DC raised the price of the wood sets significantly.

Be aware, this wood is not meant to be installed without removing the front windshield!

Its nice Joe. Who sold it and how much?
Is windshield removal always required for replacing the wood?

What was the cost and part number? Does the speaker grill have the raised slates of wood like the orginal?

I got a 4 piece set from SLS two years ago. The price today is Euro 493.- (includes the wood box between the seats)

It is possible to install without removing the windshield. You need to place a flexible steel or plastic plate underneeth the protruding bolt when sliding the left wood bow over the speedo/tack hump.

My understanding was that matt finish is original and that the gloss finish is more of a newer thing.  I can tell you the gloss is a lot harder to get right.

Per, I notice you are from Norway, i am in Olso for a couple of weeks.  Possibly i may be able to buy you 0.6L beer.

The color and sheen looks pretty close to the original finish.  It does seem a touch more transparent than the original finish. The original was basically color tinted lacquer, so the grain was somewhat hidden.  The finish in the picture appears to be stained and finished separately.  Very nice.

I have removed and reinstalled the wood with the windshield in place.  I use a thick leather pad over the instrument "hump".

Kay,
I live 5 hours drive from Oslo by the city of Kristiansand. A beer would be nice, but you normally get only 0.4L and the prices are ridiculous (as every thing else in this country) – about 8 to 9 Euros.

Joel-j,

No it did not.

Took a look at the SLS sight and was unable to find the hard top wood trim at all on page 79 ....

I had a set of repro dash wood covered in macassar ebony veneer and it looked fantastic. Since the wood is new it doesn't need any repairs so the cost is reasonable. I got the wood unfinished since it was being covered.

I think your wrong about having to remove the windshield. The wood has to be out in order to install the windshield. No exceptions.
However the new wood has to trimed and fitted to the car. This takes a minimum of 3 hours if you are lucky. The wood is always too long on the outer edges which affects where the 2 pieces meet in the center of the dash.
I'm going through the process as we speak.

Hello,

Yes you guys are right. The winshield does not need to be removed. Also as stated the wood should also be off the car if the windshield is being replaced. I'm sure that it is not always done this way but it is the best way to insure that the rubber windshield seal seats correctly.

The wood on the driver's side is a very, very tight. You must protect the guage cluster from the studs (as mentioned). The wood also needed some minor fitting adjustments to lay down nice and snug. I am sure these pieces are hand fit to each car at the factory.

If you replace the windshield and use a new seal be prepared for a long day. These new seals are quite a challenge to get back on the windshield. The factory new windshield seal from Mercedes was around $80.00 US. I thought that to be reasonable.

Hello Chad,

The owner of the car went to Mercedes and ordered the new wood. He got a slight discount but paid less than $500.00 for both right and left. He also got the wood speaker cover for around $240.00. Yes the speaker cover is as original with all the parts and pieces glued together. Since the wood was recieved Mercedes raised their prices, so they will cost more now.

One other note the owner also went to Mercedes and ordered a new original rubber driver's side floor mat (230SL). It came in and is beautiful for only $75.00 !

Some parts from Mercedes are outrageous, but always check since other items are quite reasonable. Also what's not available from the factory today is often available later!

Some dealers are not set up to order parts for older models so they automatically tell the customer they are not available.

If you can supply part numbers to the peson ordering the parts you'll be amazed at what you can get but always check the price.

Another nice feature of ordering from the dealer is that the parts will be shipped in without charge for the customer to the dealer no matter where they are coming from.
