Becker Grand Prix

Searched the archives and did not find a post on point.  I want to go from 2 to 4 speakers.  Will the Grand Prix Handle 4 speakers with good sound?

Anyone ever try an under the seat speaker?  I found one that is 3 inches high, 11 inches long and 8 inches wide.  Anyone know the under seat clearance?

Hi Tom,
I've just bought an 89 model Becker Grand Prix.
What speakers do you run with your unit. Are they footwell mounted.
The chassis opening holes for my old speakers are 100mm dia. each.
I'm only looking to use 2 speakers.

Correct-the earlier version of the Grand Prix.  My data card inidcates I had a Grand Prix from the factory, which is why I went with this model over the Europa that was installed by a prior owner.

What other cars shared this unit?  If any of the big body cars had this you'ld think they'd have multiple speakers.

How about the MB600 Pullman?

I have 5 speekers in my 280SL 2 in the kick panels 1 in the top of the dash and two in the back soft top panel that is carpeted. I have a fader controll and my radio works fine. Know if I can get the becker cassette unite and the short wave to work I will have all that I" need to be comfortable to cruise.

With the assumption that your head unit is stereo, is the center dash speaker wired left, right or exactly how did you deal with that issue?

Tom, you may want to give Bjorn at Sports Leicht a call.  I believe they've addressed these issues in the past.

With your addition of the kinder seat you may not be able to place speakers over the rear parcel shelf as Bob has done.

Performance Products has a 4 speaker system for the 107.  The system features "2 midrange/tweeter speakers w/ 2 8"woofers for the rear". The rear parcel shelf has rectangular cutouts on the vertical section.  By utilizing Ed Cave's method of acoustic material to match the interior it would be less noticeable.  The second set could be placed in the kick panels.  The only catalog I have on hand is the Spring/Summer 2004, page 30 Ref# 6138.  The performanceproducts.com site did not show a picture of this item.

Hello Tom,
The Same radio powered four speakers in the Mercedes sedans of the era. You may wish to get a original balance control for the four speaker set-up also. These were mounted on the dash or consol of the sedans. It may mount nicely next to the rear hardtop defroster button on a W113center consol? I doubt that you would want to drill a hole and mount it on the dash.

Does anyone have a photo of the original Stereo Becker Grand Prix that would have been fitted to a US Version '70 or '71 280SL? If so, could they post it.  I'm assuming that the Grand Prix's of that era had the separate amp that was connected by a Multi-pin DIN cable? I've seen Grand Prix's with a large scale multi-band display as well as ones that have a small scale the same size as a Europa Stereo scale. Also, what are the buttons labeled? Are they LMKUU or BC & FM for the US market? Finally, does anyone know what the serial number prefix letter should be D, E, F, G, etc for a 1970 production model? I believe the letter correlates to the year of manufacture of the Becker. I'm trying to source out what would be absolutely correct for my car. (Produced 11/70) Yes, I'm a bit of an authenticity nut. Thanks.
