longer wheel studs for 220/220s rear
« on: June 30, 2006, 06:06:25 »
Someone has changed out the axles or the complete rear end of my 230sl
I want to use aluim wheels therefore, I need lug nuts for the rear.
I am all set for the front.
Problem is the rear wheel studs are about 1/2" to short to be really safe. they go on, but are only on by about 4 complete truns of a lug
nut. Dose anyone know where I can get longer studs for the rear??

These are available from your local dealer...ask to see the range of lengths available, but it may be that you have to cut down longer ones, depending on the wheels you use...I have BBS spoked wheels on my 300td and the fronts were fine but the rear were too short and I had to buy longer ones, but they ended up being too long and rubbed against the e-brake cable brackets, so I had to hack saw off a 1/4".....

Ricardo,
when I went to the local dealer.(mb) they looked up 220 studs and there is only one size avalible.(same as I have now) I don't know what model to ask for to get longer one's? Because I don't know where these axles came from? the local auto parts store all had studs, but the tapper hole size(splined section) where all to small. the stud size is 12mm X 1.5 thread.(looks like about a 14 to 15mm size?

I guess I'm confused...it sounds like your rear axles have the stud and nut set-up, rather than a bolt that screws into the hub? The bolts are certainly available in different lengths..... they could be specific to certain models...my parts guy just pulled three or four different ones for me to pick from, without needing a particular model. But if you have studs, then I don't know what the answer is.  :(

You have the wrong axels in there. These probably came from an early 220Sb or something like that. You can't use mag wheels with these axels.

Dan You may be correct.I still have the orignal wheels and hub caps so .....I can always sell these wheels and tires. (just had them sandblasted and painted along with new lug bolts and like new tires)
thanks Jim
