Transmission dead
« on: July 03, 2006, 14:04:47 »
Hi Folks
I´m a new owner of a 280Sl 1969 with automatic trans.
Just today it just went dead. It feels free and with no connection to anything.

Could it be a linkage problem? Could it be so simple that a nut or bushing have passed the expiredate?

I would appreciate some suggestions what to start checking fist.

Best regards
Mikael from Sweden

I´m imported my 280sl from Usa just 6 months ago. Otherwise its aboslute great!

Try your linkage first

You could trawl through old posts on here from about 2 years back as I had the same trouble but in essence...

Get under your car at the bottom of your gear stick. It should attach to the shaft going into the transmission

If it doesn't, you should be able to engage it fairly easily - I did it with one hand - as a temporary fix. A more permanant solution requires work well beyond my feeble brain, other than i know my temp fix got me to the specialist who repaired it. Common in cars that sit in traffic a lot, apparently....
