Water Pump ?
« on: November 13, 2005, 14:11:41 »
I read a couple of posts where it was stated that the MB water pump has deeper impellers, a better design for cooling?

:?: Any opinions on brand, original MB, GMB, other?  What did you replace your pump with?

:?: Are there 2 different water pumps, one used with a/c, & one used without a/c?  One version shorter than the other?

Thank you!

It is important that you install an original M-B water pump if/when your replace the unit in your car.
If you choose to go with an aftermarket pump unit, be sure that it matches the specification from M-B (can be found in the 1968 BBB section 20, and in the Book of tables).

There is a measurement specified there for the depth of the impeller "wings" and if this is not met, there will be insufficient flow of coolant in your engine, and risk for problems.[:0]

Hi Hans,

Thank you for your info.
I'll pay attention to the specs on the wings.

Hi Bob,

I have the shorter 230 SL pump. I got my replacement from Niemoeller - as they told me, exactly built to MB specs, but by LASO (Made in Germany). It was a fraction of the cost of an original - You really want to check with Niemoeller.

I did not have heat problems before and with the new pump, the temp gauge never goes higher than what I believe to be 83 degrees Celsius - which is exactly where it was with the old pump.

Good luck,

Here is another question for all the water pump specialists out there.
The SLS site lists 3 possible water pumps for a 230SL (#58, 55, 53 in picture:50.a Cooling System 230SL).
1. Waterpump 75mm, M180,127,can be taken apart
2. Water pump, 3 hole (75mm), maintenance-free
3. Water pump, 3 hole (90mm), maintenance-free
What is the difference?
Millers and Budsbenz list 2 types (230SL w/o fan clutch, and 230SL/250SL/late 280SL). Any suggestions which one to buy?
Thanks!

Hello Alfred,

The pump I purchased from my '71 is listed as 135mm on the invoice.  It is the longer version for non A/C cars.  The shorter one is for A/C setups.  Looks like the 230s' have yet a different length of pump?
