can anyone recommend a steering wheel lock or similar for a 280 sl?  Ive tried to find one that fits the steering wheel but most of them are too small.  I dont want to have an immobiliser fitted as I feel it will ruin the original interior with flashing lights etc... and car deterrent recommendation would be greatly appreciated as I'm about to take a road trip to France.

I think a steering wheel lock is a bit passé these days. Thieves simply cut through the wheel to remove them and on a Pagoda steering wheel, that would be extremely easy. Instead, I would recommend that you have a "kill switch" installed. This would kill any potential thieves.

Okay, I kid. What it would do is to cut out the starter until you flip this hidden switch. Very simple, very discreet, and very inexpensive to wire up by your mechanic. (And since you have an automatic, thieves couldn't roll-start the car either.)

Get an immobiliser of some sort - it'll help your insurance premiums!

a long time ago a mechanic recommended the kill switch idea.
also, he said, that until I got that done, just take the rotor out of the distributor.

then if  someone wants the car they would have to tow it .

The kill switch would be a switch installed anywhere you want, but generally in the interior of the car. It would be hidden, so the casual observer shouldn't be able to find it. (Under the seat, in the glovebox, under the dash, etc.)

By the way, you reminded me that I had a battery cut-off knob installed on one of the battery terminals. It's a big green knob that you turn to cut off the juice -- prudent for extended storage as well as some minimal theft prevention.
