Wannabe No More!
« on: July 18, 2006, 17:11:22 »
On Saturday I looked at 1970 280SL advertised as "needing work."  OK car, but the price needed to be right.  Then on the way home, my cell phone rings, and it's an unsolicited offer to buy my 280SE.  That deal went down on Saturday, and the car was gone on Sunday.  I began to experience "No Project Car Panic."

The condition worsened, and last night I called the 280SL seller and made what I thought was a low but fair offer.  To my happy surprise, it was accepted.  So now in my driveway is SN 14076.  Originally from the Annapolis area, seller had it for 10 years, always garaged - took the hardtop off in '96 and never put it back on.

- originally Medium Blue, now Dark Blue (tired paint), blue tex
- no AC
- auto trans, crank windows
- obviously re-habbed, problems around driver's wheel arch
- very complete but needy (door seals, wood, dash, heater levers, motor mounts, probably subframe mounts and anything else rubber, shocks)
- great engine, some smoke - may need head rebuild.  Made it from Olney MD to Falls Church VA on a very hot day, no overheating, good oil pressure, stainless exhaust, great sounds
- trans, rear end, brakes seem OK
- good tires, wheel covers OK

I am looking forward to working with the car.  Will post some pictures after Senior Management returns tomorrow with our camera.

Chuck,

Again, congrats on your purchase.  I think you will quickly catch the bug that many of us have-obsession with these cars.  Want to come by and see your newest addition-will be in touch.

Best,

Tom

Chuck, Add my congrats to those already submitted. We could tell you had an itch for these cars that had to be scratched eventually. You will have a ball working on it.  Jim Pancoast, White Stone, VA

Chuck I'm in Fairfax Station maybe I will see you around town.  I drive a blue 1966 230SL.  I'm having a over heating problem right now but I should have that corrected soon.

Chuck,

You live about 2 miles or so from me. I know the area well. In fact, your home is on my "Test Track". Dearborn Road past Lake Barcroft through Juniper Lane on to Valley Lane and left onto Sleep Hollow as I make my way down to Valley Brook and on into the Roundtree section. I started using this route regularly about 2 years ago to break in and test my restoration project--1967 (Euro) White/Blue int 230sl w/ZF 5 Speed. Always felt that if something was going to go wrong that Barcroft was a pretty "safe" area to break down in. Fortunately that hasn't happened as I continue to work out the "bugs" after a total rebuild of every major component and a bare metal re-paint. Hope to see you around the area and good luck with your new Pagoda.

Well, I am certainly familiar with your car, having heard it in various states of tune.  Why don't you stop by? It's the stone house on the right (3254).  Driveway currently has a 300D, a 280C, a 560SL and a green BMer.
