230sl stall
« on: August 02, 2006, 21:26:03 »
Just got my 230sl automatic (250sl engine) . First night driving everything going great 60-75mph with a/c on, car is purring. Went to fill up with gas for first time, super premium (was that right). 15min later everytime I slowed down ,car would loose power and stall and when restarted I would press gas and car did not move forward then would stall. If I got car going it was fine as long as  I did not go below like 25mph, then same thing would happen. I don't know these cars any help would be great.

Hello newbe,

Probably a simple fix. But pinpointing the problem will require a little investigation. Start with the simple, inexpensive items first. It could be something as simple as the ignition points closing up.  Sometimes new points seat themseves and need re-adjusted after some driving.

You may want to replace the spark plugs, just in case one is not firing. Do you have any tune-up history on the car? A fresh fuel filter is also a good thing. How does the car run before warm-up?

You may have a stuck "warm up device" on the injection pump. Has the car been stored for a long time?

Car ran great up until new gas put in. Started up first time with little or no warmup but now every time I slow down it rattles (like its loosing power and dies)Then I restart and push on gas and nothing no momentium then stalls. going at speeds 50 and above its great.

Ja, this was the first time my wife and I drove car . The car was inspected by silver star restorations. They claim the car drove great.

Hello newbe,

It sounds like you have a stuck warm up device on the injection pump. This can be easily checked. Start the car with the engine cold and listen for a suction sound at the small air filter on the injection pump. You can use a section of hose as a stethoscope to listen for the suction sound.

If you do not hear any suction noise at this air filter when the engine is cold then the mechanism may be stuck. After the engine warms up it is normal for the suction noise to disappear.

This sounds similar to what I went through with my 250SL.  It turned out to be a blocked return line (although it could be other problems).  My car would run great on the highway, or as long as I kept going at a decent RPM.  However, after 15-20 minutes, the car would stall upon slowing down to a halt.  Someone placed a small steel ball in my return line, right near the injector pump.  I had replaced all of the hoses, along with the fuel pump.  Further I drained the tank twice.  If I had listened to others advice on this site and followed through by checking ALL FUEL LINES, I would have discovered the ball much earlier (why someone place a steel ball in the line I will never know).

Hopefully, your mechanic will discover the culprit early!
