Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and the input. Can anyone recommend a good book on restoration?
Rodd: I believe both the mirrors are the same, but I did not know they were 280 style. Can anyone tell me what the 230 mirrors would look like? I'll have to study some more pictures. I'm do not yet know a lot about mechanics, but I'm hoping to learn, at least enough to have an intelligent conversation with the mechanic. I was hoping to take it to the new Classic Center in Irvine when it gets here.
Euro headlinghts and no side lights/signals. The instruments are metric - it's showing about 63,700 km. The seller suggested it was original miles, but I would think it's more likely that it went around at least once, so it probably has 164,000 km, or almost 102,000 miles.
Joel: I think that the third seat was original, but I've order the data card. Hopefully that will help me figure out how the car was in it's original form.
Roger: Thanks for the tip on the lug nuts. I've haven't decided whether or not to go back to the original wheels, but I'll definitely have to make sure to get some spare lug nuts. I'm planning on driving it as much as possible, minus the daily commute.
I liked this car because it seemed like (1) it was in good overall condition, (2) as far as I could tell (I've been studying Meredith's Original Mercedes SL) the items which were not original were things I might be able to afford to fix and, I have to admit, I really liked the color. On the negative side, the car doesn't have it's original books/records, hopefully the data card will help.
It also has what I think is an older European Blaupunkt radio (it has the LMU buttons), but it's bigger than the Becker and all black, so I actually purchased a Becker Europa I'm hoping to have installed. I've been told that they can add an adapter so that you can hook up your IPod - I'm hoping that is the case. Anyone hooked up an IPod?
Thanks again.
