simple test for thermo time switch?
« on: September 18, 2006, 16:41:05 »
SO, ordered and received a new thermo time switch from autohaus az today.
I thought I should test the unit before installing.  If i understand correctly, at temps above 35 deg c the switch should "open" and the circuit should not work.

using a test light I connected the terminals, one to plus and one to neg.  put the unit in 60 deg c water and waited and waited and waited.
the test light was on the whole time. I thought the light would go off once the unit reached 35 deg c.

do I have a defective unit?  I verified the body of the TTS was up to 41 deg c before quitting.

at temps below 35 deg c. the light stayed on as well so nothing changed when the temp changed.?

That's not how it works. The thermo/time switch grounds the injector relay for aprox 8 seconds when cold and less time as the temp increases.

The "simple" test is to connect the switch housing to ground, attach a test light to the terminal with the larger screw and to the + terminal of the battery. the starter connects to the small screw terminal. connect power to the testlight and the small termal at the same time. When cold the lamp should stay on for about 8 secs and drop off the time it ramains on as the temp increases to 35deg C.

Because this is an electro-mechanical switch the heating coil inside the switch has to cool for about 30 seconds between tests.

Also when installed in the car, the same holds true, The cold start injector will not operate a second time untill the heating element inside the switch has had time to cool down.

I hope this answers your question

Nice answer Al.

I recall my Guru saying the best time to check the TTS is on a icey cold engine if possible..

Al, James,
yep, works now, the temp here is about 80 deg so the test lamp goes on for about 1 second then goes off.

the old switch does not even allow the light to go on.  so guess it was bad.
