wheel colour
« on: September 19, 2006, 20:13:42 »
I came across a nice example on ebay (item number 260031017594).

I'm wondering: isn't the wheel supposed to be body colour, and the hub-cap centre supposed to be the same colour as the hard-top?
This example's wheel painted black (or something like it) gives the car a very stylish look and I'm wondering if it can also be called original?
Personally, in this case I would still make the hub-cap centres the same colour as the hard-top. Comments?

In case you're wondering, my wheels are due for a repaint, and this particular combination has sparked my imagination. I currently have the one-piece hub-caps, and I've been meaning to revert to the original two-piece version that my 230sl probably came with.

Hey Waqas. A while back I did a poll here because I was considering re-painting my black wheels back to bodycolor (which is white). Most here felt white would be correct. However, one response was "keep them black" because it adds depth to the wheel. I agree and that's why I have kept mine black...That may be what you like about this example...

P.S. My wheel centers are dark blue to match my dark blue hardtop. I think you are correct that this guy's centers should also be black.

I have two sets of hub caps. If i have the top down, I use my white hubcaps which is the body color of my pagoda. when my dark blue hard top is on, I use the dark blue hub caps :)

cheers

I think it is because the hub caps has been recromed.

I just got mine recromed, and it is very difficult to polish inside the hupcap, so I was recommended to paint the inside of the hup cap too.

Hello Christian - out of curiosity, what was the reason for getting your hubcaps rechromed rather than getting new ones? I suppose rechroming means they are the original ones (brass?) vs new ones would be polished stainless steel? Would the cost of rechroming be higher than buying new ones?

Hi Cees, I don't know if mine is brass, I just gave my bumpers, hupcaps and frontgrille ( stars and wings ) to a company, I bought a new frame.
I paid ca. 900 dollars for the recrome in total, and I think ca. 30 dollars pr. hupcap, but the hupcaps are not nice done, due to that they are difficult to polish.
So I will exchange them for some new ones at pagodenteile.de, as I remember they cost 49 Euros pr. hub caps.

Waqas,
I need to have mine stripped and painted as well.  maybe we can work out a discount with the shop?

I was just going to strip them myself and then use a single stage paint to paint them.  the trick would be to see if napa can match the correct paint.

If not, I have the old steel rims from my 78 300d.  would these work on a 230 sl?

So I am a little confused. Waqas, are you considering painting the wheels or the wheel covers? and Merrill, which are you thinking of painting?

James,

To clarify (I'm reclaiming that word back from our commander-in-chief): I'd like to repaint the wheel rims, on which the tyre is mounted. I currently have the one-piece [chromed] hub-caps, and I'd eventually like to switch to the two-piece type. The wheel rim colour only shows through the two-piece type.

Matt,

Not a problem. I still haven't acquired the two-piece hub-caps, so it may be a little while. One of these days, we need to get together for the first Austin Pagoda SL Group meeting...  8)
