Downshifting from 3rd to 2nd gear is not very smooth -a bit of resistance in shifting down, All other gears, up and down are smooth. Any idea what the problem could be?

Do you double clutch? A fair amount of finess will go a long way.
Clutch in shift to neutral, clutch out rev. to XXX clutch in shift to second, clutch out. Pedals set up well for heal toe double clutch...

Hello Byron,
Check to see if your speedometer needle is erratic during de-acceleration and acceleration. If so, the slotted spanner nut at the tail shaft of the transmission is probably loose. It holds the transmission gear cluster tight and also keeps the speedometer drive gear tight.
Let us know if you have these speedometer symptoms and we can go from there.

I took the car for its 1st tune up and it is running so much better. The tranny fluid was incorrect. Put the correct fluid in and there were no shifting problems on the ride home. Feels to good to be true but it is!

Just curious, how did you (or the mechanic?) know it was incorrect? And what does incorrect mean? What fluid was put in?

Hi Rod,
I'm not quite sure how my mechanic knew the fluid was not correct (possibly the color or consistentcy of it?). I believe he flushed it and put in ATF. He also changed the plugs, from platinum to the proper Bosch plugs, changed the distributer cap and rotor, adjusted the timing and a few other things and added some type of fuel additive that would help clean out the injectors. I purchased the car just over a month ago, heard some good things about a local mechanic (who has a fully restored 230 sl) and gave him a try. So far he has been very helpful.
I know you only asked about the tranny fluid but I thought I'd give you the rundown on the tune up. Thanks.
