Erick,

I'm looking forward to catching that flick, so thanks for the recommendation. There's a link to the trailer that shows the Pagoda here:

(BTW, headrests were available on Euro 280 SLs.)

I tried the link to The Last King of Scotland, and it was invalid.  Did a search and found another one.  However, having a PC instead of a Mac, the link/site wanted/needed to install quite a few things on my computer in order to view it.  My computer said no.

If you see any large group of 113's, you'll find all manner of radios--a 1980's Becker being perhaps more correct then an ill fitting AudioVox.  You also see headrests added, headrests subtracted, and many Euro lights on US cars because people like them better then the US ones.

While that car may be "all wrong" it probably isn't too atypical of a run of the mill 113!  Nothing like any of US would own, of course! ;)

I was just re-watching the trailer and noticed that the hood (aka bonnet) "flexes" in the brief moment the car is shown. It's clearly turning very hard to the left and the top left corner flaps open a bit. Check it out here:

Does this happen on hard cornering normally?

Wow, you do have sharp eyes ! [:0]

Unfortunately, one cannot see the car before it turns to check whether the hood was completely closed before the turn.

Alfred,

You can't see the hood at the outset of the footage, but you can see it clearly shut towards the end of the footage. It clearly "flexes."

Come to think of it, I've noticed rub marks in the paint there on more than one SL. It's only noticeable when you open the hood/bonnet and study the paint in the corner where the hood would rub.

Douglas, you may have discovered a new point for would-be Pagoda buyers to check for--a marker that the car has been rounding some corners (or many) at high speed.

Would the 3 rubber buffers, usually missing, prevent this ?

How about the movie "Cleopatra Jones and the Golden Palace?"
I keep seeing it on the Spanish cable station, shows a red 68 or 69 280SL being thrashed over some rough roads in Hong Kong.  One or two scenes with prodigous amounts of black smoke belching from the tailpipes.  And running over some big bumps.  Clearly the SL can keep up with the bad guys car.
Not going to do that with mine yet.

Not really.  They are there to prevent a rattle or banging of the aluminum hood one the firewall.
What prevents this corner lifting are the two rubber tipped screw posts on the ends.  Most of the time the rubber is missing and then they are not adjusted right and allow the hood to flex to the degree where you saw the edge in the movie trailer.

Gee, Walter, Maybe that Hong Kong SL was a diesel, too!  You might be closer to doing that than you think!

I found a Pagoda in another movie - Braking Away from 1979 - won an Oscar in 1980.

When flying home from vacation with NWA from Detroit yesterday - I found this film on the personal video system on the Airbus.
It shows many scenes of a light blue 280 driving around
The film was not to bad eighter - timekiller on a long flight to Amsterdam

More about the film:

I saw that movie recently too and found it interesting how they chose the Pagoda (a design that is 16 years old and a car that is at least 8 years old) to project the image of a rich college playboy.

OK, I just have to comment on this, one of my favorite movies of all time.

One of the interesting themes in this "coming of age" movie is the European connection with the main characters.  All of the Cutters have mixed European heritage which, along with their blue-collar worker status, is the source of serious prejudice.  But the anti-hero (the rich "anglo" college kids) show their affinity for European culture with the Pagoda, while the Cutter kids show their with an affinity for Italian "passion" play with language and music.  If only they had an old Alfa.

Now, I am not suggesting anything about Germany/Italy...

But it is a great movie, just the same,

Best,
g
