64 230sl Interior and Paint Color Questions
« on: December 13, 2006, 17:44:19 »
I took the plunge and purchased a 1964 230sl (001515) and I have a few questions about the interior/exterior colors.

My data card shows a 116 interior which, according to the available database (http://www.sl113.org/data/show_table.asp?table_name=usr_color_code_mbtex), consists of:  caviar (2100) MB tex and black (6125) carpet.

I am not sure if the seat covers and/or carpet are original and cannot find any examples of "caviar"; does anyone have a .jpg of a "caviar" colored MB Tex seat? Is "caviar" another term for Black?   Also, is the 6125 carpet a solid black? my carpeting (which looks worn enough to be original) is a gray/black weave not solid black.

(note: my car, according to the data card is a 050 with 116 interior but the aforementioned database does not show the 116 interior coming in a 050 painted car.  Am I misreading the database or is the database incorrect? Any other 050/116's out there?)

And a quick question on wheel well color: is it supposed to be black or white?  I have heard conflicting information from reputable restoration shops.

It's great to finally be a part of the 113 world!

Indeed it does, thanks Kevin!  I had visited their site but only went to the Pre-71 page (which, upon further inspection I see is for 68-71)  I didn't bother looking at the '66 page.

Thanks again,

I think we've discovered over time that in the first few years of the W113 it was more accepted practice to custom order the car with your preferred color combinations.  Not all combinations sold will appear in the database, only the common ones.  Also, the database may be incomplete or incorrect, I can't recall what the source of the data was......

My '67 250SL was 158 white-grey with a Caviar interior. During the restoration (which has not been completed yet) I had the color changed to 268 dark-green with Parchment interior. The caviar is a silvery medium-to-dark grey and is not available from any source I checked with in the years before the restoration. I have owned the car for 20 years and have been looking for extra material for a long time. The unavailability of any matching caviar material drove me to change the interior color.

Paint: When I started the restoration, my car was still in factory paint and had never suffered any body damage or repairs. The entire body, with the exception of the inside of the trunk, was painted white-grey. This included the wheel wells and the underside of the floor (visible after cleaning off 35 years of road dirt!)

I believe the official answer is the wheel well colors should be the color of the body.

I would concur, the wheel wells and underbody should all be body color.

Jonny, James and Ray:
This is good news because my wheel wells are white!

Thanks,
