engine timing question

so, I have the valve cover off to check the valves tomorrow when the motor is dead cold.

so, I thought I would check the engine timing

rotated the motor till the #1 piston was TDC, cam sprocket markers lined up, rotor pointing to #1, crank timing at zero.

continued till #1 intake valve was open .4mm or -.4 since I zeroed out the guage.

the crank timing was at about 6 deg ATDC.  from what I can tell this is about right.  the bbb indicates the timing should be 5 deg atdc.

any feedback?
the only thing I did not do was bleed the tensioner, I tried but It would not budge.

I think the valves need to be adjusted before checking the valve timing. One degeree is an insignificant difference. I bet it will be right on after you readjust the valves.
Otherwise you could fiddle with changing to an ofset timing gear key.

hmm, good point about the valve adjustment.  the bbb did not mention checking the valves before checking the timing.

so, tomorrow , after adjusting the valves I will recheck the timing.

You said in another thread the injection pump has been rebuilt.
Have you checked the oil level in the reservoir? too high a level will make it impossible to lean out.
Did they install a new WRD thermostat?

My 250sl was giving 9 mpg when I bought it and now after making sure all the linkages have no play, and are adjusted correctly plus the correct oil level in the reservoir plus correcting the timing and replacing the plugs, swapping the points with a Pertronix unit, the car gives 17-19mpg around town.

I would certainly think about all the adjustments possible before worrying about a rebuilt injection pump.

Bob,
I will check the inj pump oil level,  the rebuild pump was installed in 1986.
I think the new pump has about 25,000 mi on it. I assume an inj pump would last longer than 25,000 mi

Hans at h&r checked the WRD for me and it was working find.

well, checked the oil level in the inj pump and it was low.
when the dipstick is screwed in the oil level was maybe a 10th of the way up the dipstick.

If the dipstick is just placed in the opening without screwing it in no oil level is registered.

I will get out the manual to determine which method it proper to measure the inj pump oil level.

Hey Matt,
To check the oil level, switch off the engine and wait for about 30 minutes.
Screw in the dip stick all the way and then remove it.
The correct oil level should be between the upper and lower marks on the flat surface of the dip stick.
The level is not supposed to be at the top of the dip stick.
In fact yours sounds about right.
I change the oil (approx 180ml) in the injection pump every time I change the engine oil. I also add a couple of drops of oil to the distributor shaft (inside and outside).

Yes, that's probably it.  If the pump is worn, fuel can get in the oil and completely fill the chamber.  It can also be over-filled manually.  When I first opened my pump, fluid came out of the dip stick hole on it's own for a few seconds!!  I had quite a large puddle on the garage floor, considering how much fluid is supposed to be in that pump.
