It would be a shame if we lost Arthur's posts because I believe he is one of the real experts here - but if I understand correctly this would not happen; just Arthur's identity would be 'lost' but the content would stay?

Cees,
You are correct.  Right-click on this link and open it in a new window or browser tab.  You'll get the idea:

Note that when you click on "n/a" you still get that user's profile.

As I wrote in an earlier message:

quote:
however, I can sort of fake it so that the system thinks he logged in today. That way he won't be deleted for at least another year or two. Then I -- or my successor -- will need to remember to do this again...

So "A Dalton"'s name will remain available, and he will not be changed into n/a, for another year or two that is.

Peter:

There are a few contributors whose names lend credibility to the postings. If I see something from Joe Alexander, Klaus Drexl, Achim Alhert, and some others, I know I can rely on the content. I think we will lose something if one of these "special sources" stopped contibuting and their name was reduced to "N/A".

I hope these few can be spared the "name pruning" if they they retire from the site. Arthur Dalton's name should never be removed in my view.

Richard,

That's why were working on the Technical Manual... to keep these pearls of wisdom, all collected and put together, edited to be the definitive statement on all things Pagoda. Collecting A Dalton's words of wisdom and moving them over to the correct sections in the Technical Manual would provide a great contribution.

Besides, A Dalton has stopped contributing -- people that continue to contribute will not be "pruned".

However, if we have an exhaustive list (of notable contributors) I'll see if I can change the deletion program to prevent them from pruning, so I, or my successor, cannot accidentally delete them.

Just a thought from another oldtimer that predates even bulletin boards, but you might want to make your trim program so that it only archives people with less than, say 100 posts.  Perhaps even a lower threshold like 50.

If the program dumps trace for anybody with more than that, it would give you some leeway about more prolific, and long lost posters.

Dumping that trace to a web page entitled, "missing posters" with whatever contact info you have would give the rest of us a chance to say "hey, I know that guy" and to help get them back into the fold.

The downside to distributed responsibility activities is that too few people are able to stand up and say "heck, why don't I do this...". However, many are able to respond well to requests for help along the lines of "hold this" (or in this case, "find xyz and say hello").

Dear cth350,

what you suggest is in fact easy to do.... however, I'd rather do the dificult thing and ensure we just keep quality posters in place.

It's also easy to post over 100 messages with material that's not worth keeping. Just look at my posts.

So I'd prefer an exhaustive list of vetted and quality posters, that people are interested in reading about in 10 years time.
