Club metal badges

Hi Everyone,

I'm of the opinion that metal club badges make for a great looking antique car.  British sports cars clubs use them profusely. I have set up my front chrome plate to receive them.  At the moment, my car proudly carries the M-B Club Canada and Vintage European Automobile club badges but I would like to install at least 4-5 more.  Could we start an exchange project for club metal badges on this site. i.e. I can provide any of my club badges to people in other countries in exchange for their club badge (Europe, U.S.A., Australia or others).  Any interest?

Suggestion: Could Pagoda World have its metal badge?

I agree. This subject was brought up last year and refuted much to my amaisement. I beleive there was a remmondation to a a person who designed car club badges. however I have been collecting orginal old enamel clausnia badges. from the 50s and sixtys at auctions on www.arteauto.com and other auctions. I also have some from Antique automobile Association as well.

German car badges are the small type used for grill mounting or dash. they are not the same size as the traditional we see in many of the Pagoda SL books. I would be for purchasing several club badges all three of my personal cars.

He was extremely pleasant to deal with, but as I recall, there was no concensus reached in the group.

By the way, I collect grill badges, but mostly examples from the '60s. I'd be happy to share more details, if you'd like. I agree that they can be a handsome addition to a Pagoda or other vintage car. The funny thing about your posting is that I had always collected badges, but had never actually mounted one on a car.... until the day you posted your message. Pure coincidence!

The Mercedes Ponton Group had very nice porceline over brass badges designed and made for them and they were top quality and very reasonable.

The 190SL Group had a badge made up for the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the 190SL.  We sell them for $30 (includes shipping) and still make a profit.

Joe .... Yes, we designed it and had it manufactured in China.  If we can find a graphics designer in the club, I have the sources to have manufactured.  The key to the design is the use of a few pure colors, no shading.

Very nice emblem.  Would there be any for sale?  I'm interested in one.  
Also how do the members of the 190SL group mount them to their 190SL's?  There are no big grilles to mount them to.

Walter ..... The badge is normally mounted on the grill wing (no holes).  I have also seen them mounted on the screen behind the grill and on the license plate frame of a car with a front plate.

Recognizing that we are an International Club and not knowing if the logistics and/or cost would be reasonable, I think that it would be interesting if the badges would also be identified with the members country underneath the Pagoda on our logo.

getting a pile of identical badges made is cost effective. Getting them customized in very small batches isn't. -CTH

Hello,

Another option for the USA (small license plates) owners is to mount the badges along side the license plate in the front. It will cover the area normally covered by the long "euro plates" see picture.

You can make or purchase a license plate holder with a badge mount on each side.

I sense that the question arises as to how to mount & were to mount the badge on our Pagoda SLs? I had a braket made for my Ford Mustang that does not disturb the bumper or requires drilling. It is held in place by one of the license plate bolts and sites to the right side of the license plate. I had not though about having another badge mounted to the left side to even it out.
I do know the back of the badge has a tack welded stud to mount it to the braket. I will take some picture of my Ford Mustang badge assembly, and as you will see it is a very simple design. It does give the car a more international look and that  is why I like the idea of adding one or two to my 280SL.
One other thing I am sure a lot of use preferr the square long German plates to the standard USA license plates. I am not quite sure about laws in other states , but California states you must have both plates front & rear on the vehical.
I have yet to see this enforced. My though was that a badge holder could still be fasten to the front bumper via the license plate bolts and proceed on top of the plates like a flag poll does for a flag.
