Fuel Tank Differences

After searching the archives, I have not found anything on the difference between the 230 tank and the 250/280 tank. Are they  interchangeable ? Thanks

Well, they're different sizes (capacities).  Aren't they 65 liters and 82 liters, or something like that?  I don't know if they're interchangable.  It would be nice to get the larger tank on my 230SL.

You can fit the bigger tank in the later 230 SLs with the horizontal spare wheel on the right of the car.
If you have the earlier vertical spare wheel with a wheel well on the left of the trunk, then no!

Thanks. I have the earlier upright spare, so I'll have to find a 230 tank.

Brand new ones are expensive.  How about I sell you my old one that needs cleaning (no leaks, currently, but rust might be holding the fuel in) and I buy a new large tank??

By "you can fit", does that mean it's easy and simple, or, does it mean if you're a master mechanic and have a whole weekend to spare?

I was told by SLS that its a straight one for one swap. Even the old fuel gage should work.

Hi,

I have a '66 and had to replace the fuel tank.  Tried a later model tank, but the filler neck would not fit into the filler neck hole in the body.  Decided not to try and 'bend to fit', because it was off more than a bit.  Ended up getting a new, correct tank for the 230SL, and the fit was perfect.

Even thought it is listed as a 280SL tanl I think this ebay tank is for a 230. Notice the filler on the corner of the tank(verify before bidding)
