I have a 250 SL with the original engine. I use ~0 degrees at idle with vacum on and 30 degrees at 3000 RPM, (where vacum doesn't matter) Points between 38-42 I think or is it 37-41 I can't remember exactly. Gap on spark plugs is 0,9 mm or is it 0,8 ;-) Anyway it sparks.... %CO is ~4%
Let me know if I can help any furhter.

250sl
timing 2 ATDC +/- 2 at idle with vacuum, BBB says this is the way to set up the 250sl

30 btdc at 3000 rpm
dwell angle 38 -1/+3
CO 3.5-4.5%

points gap 0.012-0.015" or replace points with an electronic module eg Pertronix hall effect, Crane optical, etc

Plugs usually straight from Bosch, w7dc, 0.035"
(I have mine set at 0.040")
