Last year, for MLK day, I dropped off my 230SL shell to a body shop with a great reputation for doing a show quality car (Gustafson's in Hatboro, PA). I asked them to make all the rust disappear and give me back perfect paint.
This MLK day (that's this coming Monday), I get the car back. Of course, it will be raining, so I may hold off a day, but it's finally time to start a thread for the girl.
The down side to starting with a shell that was given to you with all the parts in boxes, is that it's a large jigsaw puzzle. The 230SL parts book on hand is nice to help with what parts should be on hand, but not with where the part goes on the car (and it doesn't tell you what box the PO put them in, where you put that box).
So, I got lucky and found another car. This new one is more ratty, but it was about 2 miles down the road and precisely the same color. I call it a good omen (or a case of insult added to injury of the pocket book).
Details on the pretty shell to come, but here's the 2nd one
http://picasaweb.google.com/cth350/230slx2 - It runs, though it has a bearing noise.
- This one's an automatic with US lights; the other is a standard with euro lights.
- The hub caps are the wrong color white; these cars are DB158.
