Did anyone ever replace the open door buzzer with a newer "chime" type relay?

If yes, what did you use and how did you connect it?

Thanks!

You might try looking at Radio Shack I think they have a 12v "ding-dong" chime that might be made to work.

American and Asian cars are made with the switch in the - pole of the door lamp circuit, Mercedes has the switch on the + side. So a buzzer box from a more commonly available car would also need a relay to switch the circuit's polarity.

Hi Al,

Thanks!  Actually, I purchased the radio shack chime last year.  I never installed it because it sounds like the chime you hear in a department store...  not really a nice chime for a car such as ours...

I am searching for a nice bell/chime that you would hear in an upscale car...  I am sure there would be a way to retrofit this newer chime in our very deserving Pagodas!

Anyone have an idea?  I am willing to entertain any suggestions...

Thanks!

Just to clarify....

The buzzer sounds when the key is still in the ignition and the door is open.

Mine was disconnected when I bought the car.  I plugged it back in to return the car to original condition....  While I still have it plugged in, the buzzer is rather annoying...

Mine must be disconnected as well - where is it located? Underneath the dash I assume, but approximately where?

Hi Cees,

Mine is located close to the main harness plug above the left knee as you sit in the car.  Square looking relay type of box.

As I am fine tuning the engine idle, in and out of gear (working on things like the vacuum dashpot and need for a slight throttle lift when in gear...), I have to put the car in and out of gear (of course have the wheels blocked) and am constantly opening and closing the door.  The buzzer has finally gotten to me...  I guess this may be why it was unplugged?

The U.S. Depatrment of Transportation (DOT) requires that all cars manufactured after 31 Dec. 1969 sold in the USA  have an audible warning device that sounds when the drivers door is opened with the key in the ignition.

Was your SL manufactured for export to the USA? (round headlamps instead of the "fish bowls" etc.
As usual there is a fuzzy line between government mandates and industry compliance. Not sure what the date-VIN cut off between a 69 and 70 model would be. If your car was built for export to the USA and made as a '70 model with the EPA-DOT compliance sticker in the left door jamb it should have the warning buzzer. On non USA cars there is no key sensing switch on the ignition lock, a different left door jamb switch and no wiring for the the buzzer circuit
