trans bolt pattern?
« on: February 22, 2007, 17:17:19 »
Hi,
I am starting research on a modern 5-speed transnission in a 113 and I am wondering if anyone knows if the M130 engine shares the same bolt pattern as the later aluminum twin cam engine from the 107SL?

What would be the technical challenge of installing such a trans in a 113body? (i.e.shift lever, drive shaft...)

Hold on Shvegel,
Be sure you trial fit first.
I tried the original automatic mated up with a 1981 300D automatic motor and they would not line up.  Forced me to buy the tranny that went with the motor.  This was on a 1968 280SEL, with a frozen M130, that I converted years ago from gas to diesel.
So do a trial fit first before buying anything.

And to anwer your other question on the 220SL.  Yes it has a 5 speed tranny in it, but from the W201 series.  The starter is on the opposite side, drivers side.

I am just in the process of buying stuff to put this all together. The driveshaft is easy you just throw money at it. The shifter is a fabrication job but not difficult.

The real problem is mating the engine and trans which will require building a fixture to hold a stock transmission and locate the shaft height etc. Then I will have to remove the stock trans and build a u dapt it kit to mate the more modern 5 speed trans to the M130 engine.

I have done all this before on a variety of projects including helping a friend wedge a V-8 Porshe 928 motor in a 4 cylinder 914 which required a custom adaptor and a vastly reworked flywheel.

Walt,
Speaking of the 220SL I wanted to commend your pioneer spirit. Sounds like an interesting project.

Maybe somday I'll get up the courage to drop the 1988 BMW M5(300 hp with a few mods) engine in my SL then I wont have to worry about engine and tranny adaptors.

Of course I'll probably be asked to turn in my grille star

If you are talking about the M110 twin cam that came in Euro 107sl's, they have a larger diameter flywheel and bell housing. I tried once mating a 110 motor to a 114 side loader 4 speed when I built my 250PT and ended up changing both the engine and trans from a 116 chassis 280se to make it work.
