My 71 280SL
« on: February 20, 2007, 07:56:53 »
Hello all. Just found this group and wanted to share some shots of my SL. OK I know she's a bit dirty but she's a driver not a show car :D

With her favorite passenger on board

Nice Pagoda! It's very similar to Terry Shores' 280 SL in Southern CA and also to Trice's "Carling" in Sarasota. You've got to meet up with the growing Northern VA crowd in this forum. They're a very congenial group.

Pretty car, especially with color coordinated pooch.  Looks like Old Town Alexandria, somewhere around Lee Street, am I right?

Thanks. Dog came first so we had to make the car match 8)

Yes it is Old Town and yes one street up from Lee, the 600 block of Fairfax. You can tell my wife likes red because the front door and both side gates are also bright red. See above neighbors PT.

Mike, you also in Old Town?

No, I'm just south of Old Town, off of South Kings Highway.  I hope you have off street parking for your Pagoda.  I remember a green 250SL that used to live on the cobblestone section of Prince Street for many years.  The bumpers, taillamps and trim, and headlights and grille suffered horribly as time passed.  There also used to be a black Adenauer sedan up on Wilkes street that only finally disappeared a couple of years ago.

Mike - I think I've seen your SL on the GW Parkway. Have you gone to annual SL get together at Tom Sargent's?

Old Town is a great backdrop for automobile shots.  Here's a pair I took right around the corner from you a couple of years ago.

Mike,

It's unusual to see a US-spec 1971 280 SL without the rear defrost option. Did you remove yours?

I didn't. I'd have to look at the hardtop to see if there are wires in the rear window. It was originally a FLA car so maybe it did not come on souther cars??? However, it does not see the snow or ice so I never even gave it a thought. Thanks for pointing that out to be. I'll look into it.

Thanks

Mike: Your car looks, almost, just like mine, except you car is prettier. I have a question about the upholstery: Is it Leather or MB Tex (Vinyl)? The surface of the area in center, where the pleats are looks different. Do you know if it was re-upholstered and who supplied it? Also, is your passenger side mirror a little convex, so that you can see a larger area (like in modern cars)? you can write me e-mail.

That's definitely leather. I'd say modern leather.

Douglas,

Yes it is leather and yes it's modern. I had the car completely restored between 98 and 99 by Gernold at SL Tech. Repainted, mechanically completely rebuilt, etc. The interior was done then by his upholstery person.
The mandate to Gernold was to make the car as good as when it can off the line but it will be a car to be driven without worrying about the paint, chrome, birds, etc. So no trailer queen

Mike

Thanks

Very nice SL!  I like the detailed fender wells, painted correctly.  After a good fluff and buff and cleaning up the brake dust on the wheel covers, I would put your car a few notches above a "driver".  Thanks for sharing!
