Found these under my car - are they from the 113?
« on: April 26, 2007, 14:32:43 »
Evening All,

I am just preparing to work on my car at the weekend (repack rear bearings and install relined brake shoes then figure out why she won't start anymore) when I found these 2 bits under the car. Now, the MAY not be from the Pagoda as several other vehicles have been in and out of the garage, however, I'd like a second opinion beacause I think that the black piece looks like it may be off a (timing) chain. If anyone thinks it is (and I haven't seen a Pagoda timing chain) is it at all possible that the peice could have fallen out from its proper place? I have never taken the engine apart, although my ex- 'mechanic' (term, loosest sense, etc) allegedly checked it and knowing him, it is possible that he managed to screw it up. It could also be a piece off an old timing chain that got stuck in the car and all my recent work dislodged it. (Seems unlikely though).

Does anyone have a view on whay they could be? Am I being overly nervous here?

(The gold coloured one is brass or copper and looks like it had a hinge - now broken. Measurements in cm)

Thanks,

JH

To my eye, it looks like part of a zipper from a sweater.

Hello James,

I don't think it is a W113 part either.

one is from a pair of boots or skates...the top part above the shoelace holes. The other one could either be a safety switch from a 45 handgun or bb gun or half a zipper.

So:

Based on the replies, I need now to audit my wardrobe for a faulty fastner and pair of hiking boots that might fail at a moments notice. Having completed that task, I then need to conduct a thorough check of my aresenal to ensure that none of my weapons are missing a safety catch?

Actually, the thought of having a sweater with a 'zip fastner' is almost as shocking as the thought that I might own a dodgy .45 (we have 9mm, sadly, in the metric half of the globe).

And anyway, isn't a sweater that opens and closes a cardigan?

I am greatly reassured. Well, sort of.

JH

PS - I might add somewhat weakly that the 'piece of timing chain' concept was not mine; nevertheless I accept responsiblity for the least useful post of 2007 to date.

As you may all know, I am no expert on the intricacies of a Pagoda. I have to leave (pay?) the experts to do most of the dirty work

But

I am pretty sure that the bit with the numbers on does not come off a Pagoda.

No need to thank me ;)

Also maybe your SL is trying to tell you something?  It's tired and hot from wearing the optional winter coat and wants it taken off.  ;)

It's amazing! If I had the collective knowledge of this forum available, I could go on the "Who want's to be a millionaire" show and have the correct answer to any question. But I have grown so old quickly and smarter much more slowly.

I actually think a "mystery piece" would be a fun forum segment...even if the pieces aren't from an SL. A good brain stretch.

And with that million, you'd only go and blow it on another Pagoda... 8)

Hello All - - The item on the right appears to be the direction change lever that has broken off of a low quality  3/8 drive ratchet.   Tools imported from Taiwan and India usually end up in the hands of lower echelon "mechanics" such as the individual you describe. These same tools have no business being in the tool box of anyone who puts a wrench to a W113.  Like the Snap-On marketing slogan   says - - - "There is a difference".

left one for sure an eye-let from a boot and the right piece looks an awful lot like part of the trunk lock assembly from our cars. the part that goes on the end that turns as the key is turned. i can't remember if it has a hole going through it though.

Okay, I say we pool all the parts that are on the floor underneath all our cars and try to build something.

Right now, we've got a pretty good shot at a motorized cardigan with timing-chain zipper.....

...with guns. It's a sort of self-defence cardigan, but with unreliable footware. 'Close-in' protection knitware perhaps, rather than long distance attire? (On account of the lace up and zipper flaw).
