Groaning rear wheel
« on: June 17, 2007, 15:25:43 »
When the car has been driven a good while, if I make a hard left turn, I occasionally get a steady low frequency "groan" sound from the right rear.  The noise normally goes away as soon as I straighten up the wheels.  There was one occasion when it remained even when I finished the turn and it went away when I shifed weight with a wiggle of the steering wheel.

Am I correct in assuming that this is an indication that the right rear wheel bearing is going bad?  Or is it possible that something else is making the noise.  At 183,000 miles I don't know if the differential fluid has ever been changed.  And, if I have to replace the right side bearing, should I do the left as a precaution.

Well, I had groaning from the left side and it was the bearing. But as I was told, the left and right bearings are not the same and the right one rarely fails (the left is ball bearing, the right is barrels and costs several times more.)
