Injector solenoid
« on: April 28, 2007, 09:41:23 »
Just purchased a 1964 230SL. Starting the long process of bringing it up to daily driver status. I am unable to start the car. Gas flow is good in and out of injector pump, new thermo-switch, the solenoid on the pump clicks but after takinng it off and testing, the plunger just flops bak and forth. A local mechanic wants 4000.00 to install a rebuilt injector pump, can the solenoid be the problem and if so where can I find one?

Andy,
Contact Hans at H&R injection repair,  631 589 1600 he may have a spare to sell you.

he rebuilt my inj pump and tested 6 injectors for 988 US.

don't get suckered by the mechanic, removing and installing the inj pump is more annoying than difficult.   the first time i did it, I spent about 30 minutes to R/R.

If you have hans rebuild your pump and test your injectors you will have 3000  (us?) for other fun stuff

Hello chauvin,

Before you run out and start replacing expensive parts I would certainly find out exactly what the problem is. Remember 90% of injection pumps sent in for rebuild are OK!

andy,
Welcome to the friendliest Pagoda site.
The cold start system of the Pagoda is a combination of temperature sensors and electrical relays and solenoids.

It only takes one device to be NOT working properly to cause start up problems.

The 'Cold Start System' has been discussed many times on here so 'Search' for things like 'adjustment of linkages' 'cold start valve' 'cold start solenoid' 'thermo time switch' 'injection pump'
also search for 'TOUR' .
Joe Alexander has contributed many 'TOURS'.
You will find mountains of information which should give you enough information to start asking pointed questions.

Before doing anything expensive prepare yourself with the information from this site.

good luck and stay in contact.. remember, ask about anything you need to know

Andy,

Congratulations on your purchase!  Come to Ohio and learn more than you thought possible in one weekend.  Perhaps you could join the convoy with these fine fellows from down South.

Hello chauvin,
Could you explain more about the issues? Have you got the car to start at all since you have owned it? Any other history on the car?

Thanks for all the responses, sorry I have not answered sooner but we were on vacation. Sent the injector to Hans, He said there were a number of problems with it but he can repair it. I sdhould get it back soon and will reinstall and try to start it again, I am sure this is only the first of many questions and I am so thankfull there is a forum like this with great people willing to help.

andy,
did you send your injectors to hans as well?
I would recommend it,  I sent him all 6 of min and 3 were defective.
I had the R2 version.

Pls pull yours and have hans check them out. if any are defective and they are r2's let me know,  I have 3 r2's that hans checked out that are good.  I would be willing to sell them to you for a few bucks plus shipping.

I went ahead and ordered new injectors, a little pricey but the old ones looked so bad I figuered I would just replace them.
