My '64 has two fuses on the right fender (in front of the coolant overflow pot) with wires on the back, but none on the front.  Anybody know what these are for?

The fuse block next to the voltage regulator is for the radio and the motorized antenna.

Al, Where does the power/wire to fuses 13 and 14 come from? Fuse 3, the 'radio' fuse?

The radio fuse box gets its power from the B+ terminal on the back of the alternator (the 10 mm nut) You could use the #3 fuse if you wanted the radio to switch on with the inition. There is no accessory position on the ignition switch on sl's made before 1968.

I am putting a newer radio in a 1970 280SL.  It needs an "always hot" lead, which is no problem, as well as one that becomes hot with the ignition in positions 1 and 2.  In position 1, I cannot find a fuse with power.  The owners' manual states that position 1 only unlocks the steering.

So I have a conundrum.  If I run both leads to "always hot," then the display stays on and runs the battery down even if the radio is off.  If I wire the second lead to a source that comes on in position 2, then you really can't listen to the radio unless the engine is running.

Any suggestions?

Chuck

A 280sl should also have the radio fuse box on the right fendeerwell next to the voltage regulator. On cars 68 model and later this should have power when the switch is in the 1 and 2 position. It gets it's power from the terminsl marked "R" on the ignition switch. Remove the screws where the wires attach to radio fuse box and clean the connections, because of it's location they are subject to corrosion.

Al -

You nailed that one.  Fuse box was there with completely corroded and blown fuse and clipped-off wire.  Cleaned it up, installed new fuse, and now have power.  So all I need is a new wire to the radio.

Thanks,

I hate to belabor a point but I'm still a bit confused about the two rogue fuses (13 & 14?)  Mine are on the left side and one is fused the other is open.  I could not locate these fuses on the electrical diagram and I tried tracing the wires from the fuse box but got lost in the jumble so I thought I'd ask.  Does anyone know what the existing wire might go to and what the empty fuse holder was supposed to support?

(notes: I do not have a powered antenna and I have a 1964 dealer installed Blaupunkt radio but they wired it to the courtesy light.)

I have attached a picture of the fuse box in question.

Thanks!
Steve

Aha!  it fuses the fog lights!

Steve,

Perhaps an odd question, but was your car originally a Euro model?  French?

David:

I don't think so.  It was built in Dec '63 and delivered to European Motors LTD in San Francisco, CA in April '64 but I don't think it sold until May or June of '64.

Does this configuration sound Euro?  I've studied all the pictures I can find of engine compartments and have yet to see one that has the aux. fuse box on the left.  Perhaps James H. can check his to see if it matches mine, his rolled off the line about a month or so before mine...James...are you out there?

Steve,

My French '66 230SL has the same fuse box.  When I first joined the group (well, actually, the old Yahoo! group), I asked what it was for; the best guess was radio, but I quickly demonstrated that that was not so (removed the fuse, radio still worked).

Being French, my car had a strange wiring quirk: The fog lights would come on with the parking lights, but not with the headlights.  I finally traced this down to a circuit from the parking lamp connection on the light switch (#57), through that fuse to the fog lamp pull connection back on the light switch.  I removed that circuit and wired up the fog lamps as shown in the 230SL wiring diagram (from the fuse #8 rather than the light switch), and everything worked as advertised.  That's why I wondered about your car.

David:
That's exactly how mine is wired!  Fog lights only work with parking lights, not with headlights. Now I don't know if I should speak to my car in German or French!  Out of curiousity, how is your radio wired?

Thanks for the excellent information on the correct wiring.

Steve,

My radio is wired to the hot lead that runs the glove box light (and probably the courtesy light as well).  I'll probably wire it to one of the fuses next time I'm working in that area - it won't really change anything, it just feels cleaner.

Hi Steve. I'm always here! Anyway -- emailed you offline before I saw this...

To summarize: mine has the fuse box on passenger (right) side. I believe it once powered the radio -- right now it's not powering anything... (but it is live. Found that out when I was messing with my Voltage Regulator  :| ).

Fuses on right fender near overflow tank are radio/power antenna feed from the rear of the alternator.Found this on my '67 250SL.Hope this helps...Fred Hayes,N.C.
