bobs flex disc project
« on: May 24, 2007, 12:01:36 »
its been a few weeks, but ive started changing out my flex disc, and now have a couple questions. 1)my driveshaft doesent have the sleeve nut as seen in the bbb, it has what appears to be a 2 piece rear driveshaft w/splines. i assume i must remove the bolts from the center bearing and slide shaft back on the splines for clearance to change out the disc- correct?(car is a 1964 build date euro model) 2)grease zerk at front of driveshaft is broke off. i got it out, does anyone know what thread it is so i can get a replacement?also- what exactly does this lubricate?  3)my flex disc kit came w/ a sponge rubber bushing and an o-ring where do they go?(i dont yet have the shaft loose, see 1)it may be obvious when i get it apart. -bob

bob,
do a search for flex disk, there is a post that has great photos.

1. the grease fitting I assume greases the spline.
2. good question, you could remove the grease fitting off the center bearing for comparision, they are most likely the same
3.once you get the old disk off the sponge bushing goes on the shaft and the o ring will go between a metal plate and the end of the shaft.

the post, if you find it , will have great instructions and photos.
the post will also provide you instructions on proper bolt installation.

Bob .... Attached is the diagram of the flex disk parts.  The grease fitting lubricates the centering ball from the transmission flange in the socket at the center of the flex disk #35.  You can see where the O-ring seals the back of #35 and the rubber circle, #50, seals the other end of #34.

The spline driveshaft is easier to work with that the later shaft.  You are correct, just remove the center bearing bolts and let the shaft move to the rear to get the room to replace the flex disk.

Hello Bob,

Sometimes it helps to remove the zerk fitting near the splined part of the driveshaft before you slide it back.  This allows the grease to extrude out and the driveshaft to compress.

thanks to all who helped me w/ information- the job went very smooth and i went for a drive this p.m. no vibration at all, smoother than its ever been. i suspect the disc had been deteriorating for some time.next- a new master cyl. as mine is leaking. would anyone recommend a parts source? i just checked out k&k, $156- that seems pretty pricy for a master cyl-but i guess its not for a chevy.-bob
