injection pump and speedometer cable
« on: September 28, 2003, 22:35:43 »
Hello fellow members,

My 66'' 250se is a good original car (170km/h on rout 87) but, the F.I. pump (along with maybe my head) nead inspection. I won't to try to get it runnig as smooth as glass . Is this the place to start ? Right now its running very well but ritch ,i'll chech the thermostat ,but I won't to get the right measurements of all control linkages . What are the specks ? What tool do I need to mesure them with? Do I take them all out of the car at once? At the fuel pump end, and  the air end , the links conect to an arm witch is supposed To rest on a plate but the arm is just shy of resting on the plate. The links are tight  but factory correct I don't  think so . Also , the speedometer cable is eratic and  buzzes at speed
is it hard to take out? and how. thank you all .

Hello Alex. Have you checked the Technical Articles section for tips? Here's a link to the fuel injection pump section - there's a lot of good info there. For the throttle linkages, you need to make sure the connections (ball joints) are in good operating condition, no free play, nor in the various bushings (bronze for the transverse rod crossing over the valve cover and the nylon ones way down on the engine block, beneath the manifolds) etc etc.
There's a lot to tuning the linkages, cold start devices, ignition etc and, of course, the basic condition of the engine itself plays its role. Also the FI pump calibration is relevant, although I understand that this is one of those areas of last resort:

Good luck,

Hello Alex,
The 250-SE sedan dash cluster pulls straight out the front. One large knurled nylon nut must be removed from behind first. You will have to work your hand up behind the cluster to remove this knurled nut.

Start your engine improvements by checking the fuel filter, check the fuel injection air cleaner (on the injection pump). The linkage stop on the venturi must be checked (many previous posts). The linkage must be on it's stop at the venturi and at the injection pump. Next follow the linkage set-up procedures posted. Invest in a minor tune-up (points, spark plugs, check wires) after everything is in good order turn to the injection and we can go from there.
