Gasoline
« on: September 13, 2003, 23:42:09 »
I'm picking up my brand new 1971 280 SL next week and saying I'm excited falls way short.  The car is a 65,000 mile original that has been correctly stored for all of its life in a collector's climate controlled storage building where he housed it along with some other fine gems. Anyway, as I'm a newbee, I'm hoping someone can educate me reference gasoline for this beauty.  I understand that the 1971 280 engine was a lead gasoline model and that the lead in the gasoline actually helped lubricate the valves. I also understand that failure to continue using leaded gasoline can cause problems, but as we all know there is only unleaded available at the pumps. Consequently, my questions are:
1.  Will using unleaded gasoline create a problem for the engine?
2.  Is there a lead additive that should be used?
Sorry for the dumb questions, but I did mention I needed an education!
Thanking you before hand from Los Cabos,Mexico.

Welcome to the group jsolis. Previous discussion of this question indicates NO lead or additive is required as the valve seats are quite hard.  As a new user, you should become familiar with the search function of this site, it works quite well.  Many of your questions, and you will have more :) have probably been answered before.  The more you learn about our cars, the better you will appreciate it's unique engineering.
