My trip can be read about in the events section.
The Red Rocket ran well and I filled up when I left and twice during the trip with about 1/2 tank ( 65 liter ) left over when I got home.
1,100 KM traveled
110 - 120 liters
average engine speed in 5th gear @ 3,200
oil consuption was high due to oil leak at about 3 liters

Average fuel mileage in US gallons 22 - 23 MPG.

Michael raises a good point—you should indicate top up or top down in the stats to factor it into fuel consumption.

There is a skin colored, light beige, earplug called Deci-Damp. I love that name. Next time, try them as they are not so noticable to the local cops.

- 824 miles total/37.12 gallons for overall 22.2 mpg
 - Torrential rains on the way to Blacklick for most of trip
 - Top down and sunny for most of return trip to PA
 - No oil or fluid use (except for sun screen oil)
 - No negatives on my car except for some drips on my feet from under dash in heavy rain (first time ever for me with car in heavy rain and first time ever for a trip this long)
 - Only positives as to event, owing to gracious hosts and a classy bunch of people at event, many of whom have forgotten more than I will ever know about our cars.

Obviously from the results listed by others, we can surmise that “a very well tuned engine” running like new, is likely to give  impressive performance.
Both Michel  and I have 280SL’s that are running well, but I dare say we could both benefit from “a professional tune up”.
Below are the results of our 1600 mile true comparison round trip from Montreal to Blacklick. We consider this run to be about 95% highway at a conservative 60 mph,and "top down" 98% of the time.
Both cars were refuelled at the same  service  stations en route.
Code: [Select]
Michel’s 280 with automatic       VS  Tom’s 280 automatic & Borg-
                                      Warner Overdrive

Date Distance   Fuel gal.  MPG       Fuel gal.  MPG
07/26 292.4 mi.  16.274     17.97   14.25       20.51
07/17   312.7   16.322     19.16   14.50       21.56
07/29 268.6   16.528     16.25   13.93       19.28
07/30 291.7   16.850     17.31   13.46       21.67
07/31 367.6      19.910     18.46   16.51       22.27
Total  1533.0   85.884               72.83
    Averages: Michel’s   17.85 mpg    VS Tom’s 21.05 mpg
Thus we can confirm, for the identical run, a "net fuel economy of 17.9 %" that was achieved with the use of Overdrive, slightly more than I had previously reported in my update, under “Overdrive for Comfort and Economy”. Sincerely; WTF

Jacksonville to Blacklick driven by BK mostly interstate. Blacklick to Jax with a 70/30 split with me nearly exclusively on "Blue Highways".

Miles including around Blacklick: 1,968.
Avg. mpg: about 16. (We didn't worry about it)
Hardtop: On.
Noise level: Pleasant enough to have normal conversation.
Interior temp: Probably around 75 degrees (A/C works GOOOOD! 8) )
Tire rubber left on the "Tail of the Dragon":  None, Officer.  ;)
Miles with smile plastered on my face: Still counting.

bjdudd:
"best" fuel economy with softtop up; Cw x A = 0.481
"medium" with hardtop, Cw x A = 0.515
"worst" top down, Cw x A = 0.610
