Mb tex material for front seats
« on: August 31, 2010, 08:22:30 »
I have been looking for five years for the proper mb tex in order to restore the last item in my 230 sl which needs ateention, the front seats. The problem is apparently the colour of the mb tex material which, until now, i have not been able to trace, champignon or , in english, mushroom.Has anyone ideas where this material could be found?? Thank you very much.

Check this page: http://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/UpholsteryCodes

And check your datacard for the correct colour code. Are you sure the colour is not Cognac, or Bamboo, or parchment? You'll need the code to be sure.

Suppliers are in Europe,  http://www.sls-hh-shop.de/ (SLS), or http://www.cabrio.de/ (KHM), or in the US, http://www.gahh.com/, GAHH.

Bob (cascadia) did put in new MB (-like) TEX in his barn-find 230.
Looks great.
Search the photo gallery for his story.
You may want to contact him personally.

Good luck!

Thanx, Peter and Achim for your input, the suppliers adresses are all known.
No the colour is not cognac, bamboo or parchment, it has the MB code 121 and looks brown/ whitish or whitish/brown like mushrooms do, hence the name ""champignon"".
My hope is that someone, somewhere still has this colour MB tex. This colour is still available in leather but i want the car kept in the original condition ie with MB tex.

I have green tex, so a similar problem. I got samples from all the major suppliers to compare quality against my original material. None were as good or even really comparable.  When I asked www.cabrio.de, they said that they don't sell any tex reproductions because none are of original quality.
My choices are to change to an available color of the reproduction tex or go to original color in leather.  Since neither choice is original, I have decided to go to leather and keep the original green color. My dilemma now is whether to just recover the seats in leather since the rest of my tex is in excellent condition or to go ahead and do everything.

I encountered the same issue with my interior color #113 known as "bronze" back in 1966.

Try to find an installer who works with GAHH in California (or perhaps contact them directly?). Make certain to look through all of their vinyl samples for ALL makes for a potential match. They made a seat kit for my car from a stock Porshe material. They stamp the basketweave into the fabric anyway so no matter what color they use it appears to be original. If you will...note the two picks below. The largest portion of the vinyl is new but that on the ash tray cover is orginal. This was an acceptable compromise for me as opposed to trying to have something custom made. In addition, because GAHH just pulls and stamps the seat covers from flat stock, there was no upcharge for this special request.  :o

Also, keep in mind that this material is really only MB Tex once ... when it came from the factory IN THE CAR. I don't believe that there is truly such a thing as MB Textured Vinyl as an aftermarket item. Its just textured vinyl made to look like the original.

Good Luck!

Bogeyman,

I face the same dilemma. The original material , MB tex, is not available in the correct colour except in leather and yes I only need to do the seats because the rest of the interior is in a good condition. Having it all retrimmed in leather would cost, moreover, a small fortune.

The Technical Manual suggests that code 121 is called "cream"...

http://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/UpholsteryCodes

Look at all the vinyls that GAHH offers including Jaguars and BMW's and you will see some similar colors. Also, they show a cream for 1980's - 1990's MB's that looks correct (see the link below). GAHH will cut down samples and send them to you if you request them...
