280 SL owners/sellers--a favor, please
« on: November 09, 2007, 18:46:40 »
6 weeks ago my 1970 280 SL was stolen and i posted this to this forum.

now my insurer (geico) has gotten back to me with a settlement

i'd like to gather as much information as possible on recent sale prices of 280 sls in order to go back to geico and get what i think is a fairer value for the car.

i have a nice thick packet consisting of photos of my car, and web page printouts of 280s for sale from places like oursl, aventura, 2 places in los angeles (where i am), one in orange county, and one in palm springs.  i will also include a letter from my mechanic as to the condition of the car.

but i would also appreciate it if anyone on this forum who has either bought or sold a 280 sl within, say, the last 8-12 months, would please email me at adler@rand.org and let me know the following:

1. $$ you paid, or received for the car

2. what state (and city, if you don't mind) you sold or bought the car in

3. any description that would indicate what shape the car was in

4. what year sl the car was

many thanks in advance.

btw, in case anyone is curious, my car was my daily driver and, therefore, not insured as a classic (even though it was a classic to me

also, i am in negotiations to purchase a 1967 250 sl, and am very excited about that  :D

Suzy,

Rather than rely on this group, most of whom are "owners" rather than recent buyers and or sellers, you might want to check with John Olsen of the SL Market Newsletter http://slmarket.com/ as well as Roy Spencer of http://oursl.com/.  I don't know if Roy tracks prices but I know that John Olsen does, and he has a condition classification as well.

If the insurance company is giving you trouble, I know that John Olsen provides consulting service that might help; so does Stu Hammel http://www.classicmercedes.net/ and many of the well known restorers out there who sell cars, too, such as Mark Passarelli http://www.ranchomerced.com/My_Homepage_Files/Page1.html, Paul Russell, and others, too.  The list is not all inclusive; there's also some good ads in The Star for consulting and collector Mercedes sales, etc.

Good Luck.
