spedo...repair?
« on: October 13, 2003, 13:49:40 »
I am in the middle of workig on my spedo, and i am looking for some help.
my guage works but the odomiter dose not turn. I removed the unit from the dash and upon inspection i noticed that a small plastic gear inside the unit was missing three teeth. This is the gear that is directly driven by the cable just at the far back of the unit. One side of it is a metal worm gear and the other is a nylon slightly of center straight tooth gear.
my question is can i buy this part or do i need to replace the spedo as a unit.
any help would be great. :)

Jerry,
Hi.  I found these companies listed in our very own list of vendors.

One fo them should be able to help you.  If not, perhaps you could contact VDO directly?

Hello Jerry,

I have not done it so far. Perhaps speedos are to high (complicated) for me.
Had my stuff overhauled at North Hollywood Speedometer (see below in Rodd's listing). I am very pleased. Part looks like new. Costs were about 200 $$.
If you want to stay with DIY, I would like to recommend to get any 108, 110 or 111 or 114 speedo for parts. Inner parts of the speedos should be pretty much the same. It's at least worth the trial.

Please let us know how it works out.

Good luck!

thanks for all of the input and help.
I ended up taking the gear out and using epoxy glue to fill in the areas that had been broken off then i used a small file to reshape the material back into the shape of the missing teeth.

now its back in the car and working great! :D
