A Question for 230 SL Owners

I can't leave this one alone.... Does anyone with a 230 SL (stick or auto) with original carpeting have anything but a rubber surround around his gearshift?

Here's an example of the black rubber "lip" that surrounds the shifter on a 280 SL:

I can say definitively on a 280 SL that this is how the carpets were made, but I'd like to confirm that this applies to the 230 SL as well.

Here's a pic of my '64 230sl (#1515) with the original carpet: it has a rubber grommet around the boot (the grommet is attached to the carpet (glued) and fits snuggly around the shifter boot.)

I have an origunal carpet with automatic and it is the sme as Paddy's picture.  I think the standard shift had a rubber grommet

See, this is the problem — Paddy's carpet is different. To my eye, it looks like the trim from the sides of the carpet has been used for the gearshift surround as well. It even looks to be red and not black.

I'm not positive, but I think Paddy's carpet is old, but not original. Take a closer look at your carpet, Bob. I'm curious to see what you find.

It just doesn't make sense for Mercedes to have a part, then use it sporadically. They were remarkably consistent.

Mine is trimmed the sme as Paddy's except the trim  is black but then i have a grey/black original carpet.  I know it is original as I've has the car since '67. The car is a '65 230 SL. His trim is red as it would  have matched the  carpet.

I think that standard shifts used the reubber grommet and automatics used the carpet with the border.

It took me a while to do a little investigation on this topic myself, 'cause I was not sure about this. :?
I agree with the observations of Bob, Paddy and Steve; their findings are correct.
This means, the 230 stick shift had (and still has today ...) the rubber gromet 111 997 XXXX for sure but the automatics had not. My only picture that I have of a definitely original 230 automatic square weave carpet shows the same vinyl edge binding as Bob's and Paddy's carpets. So, there was no rubber grommet equivalent for the -12- and -22- cars.

It makes then some "logical sense" for Daimler to have these different surrounds replaced with pretty similar looking surrounds on the 280 SL multiloop carpet whose rubber surrounds are "welded" with the carpet and cannot be separated without destroying it ...
But you are definitely the better 280 expert than I; you had two of them...
