It took me a while to do a little investigation on this topic myself, 'cause I was not sure about this. :?
I agree with the observations of Bob, Paddy and Steve; their findings are correct.
This means, the 230 stick shift had (and still has today ...) the rubber gromet 111 997 XXXX for sure but the automatics had not. My only picture that I have of a definitely original 230 automatic square weave carpet shows the same vinyl edge binding as Bob's and Paddy's carpets. So, there was no rubber grommet equivalent for the -12- and -22- cars.
It makes then some "logical sense" for Daimler to have these different surrounds replaced with pretty similar looking surrounds on the 280 SL multiloop carpet whose rubber surrounds are "welded" with the carpet and cannot be separated without destroying it ...
But you are definitely the better 280 expert than I; you had two of them...
