Fan - 6 or 8 blades?
« on: January 06, 2008, 07:13:13 »
My 113 is a '71 and came with A/C and a 6 blade fan.  In looking at the SLS website, I noticed that they list 8 blade fans for USA cars w/AC.

Should the later 113's w/AC have the 8 blade fan?

Which one do you have?

Hi Bob, good question:
while my EPC (Electronic Parts Catalog)shows only 6 blades, fan 108 205 10 06, my car (MY1969 US automatic A/C) does have 8 blades.

Let's say a EURO version 1969 280SL without AC had an eight blade white plastic fan, could it be original or has to be after-market?

Thanks All!

Just to clarify, the reason I am asking the question on the number of blades has to do with cooling.  Every year we all seek to keep our engines from the "red", and to do this, all must be in correct and working order, as MB originally designed.

Thanks again,
Bob

Not sure it's pertinent to your question, but my '65 Euro 230SL without A/C has a plastic fan with only 4 blades.  The part came from the Classic Center, and replaced an identical fan, so I assume it is correct.  The car never has trouble with overheating.

Yes Chris -- it is correct. The earlier cars had the 4 blader. I also think in general, the earlier cars have less cooling problems than the later ones.

Hello Bob,

Cannot say for sure. I would venture a guess;   Earliest W113 cars had a fixed four blade fan. The six blade fan was used on later early cars.  The eight blade fan improved cooling a little more on the latest cars. These multiple blade fans moved more air and offset the additional strain and heat from the larger engines, popular accessories like AC and larger alternators, and emission devices.

The trade off is they take a little more horse power to spin the eight blade fan!

Thanks Hauser!

If you have 6 blades and live in Florida and no heat issues, that's good enough for me!

 :) Thanks very much!
