Rear Axle Compensating Spring

Been real curious about the rear compensating spring... what it does, how it does it, and when would you know it was worn out?

I was checking with local MBZ dealer parts guy about replacement.

He gave me only two options: a heavy duty version for 'Harsh Roads'(part #113-329-0301), and a version for when "Greater Ground Clearance is needed" (I didnt ask the part #).

Hmmmm?!? Greater ground clearance?

How would this work? Would it be longer, thereby pushing/moving the axle down/away from the car? But wouldnt that take pressure off the springs and shocks? And wouldnt that increase positive camber?

My car sits about 1" lower in rear... I wonder if replacing the compensating spring (rather than the coil springs) would restore that inch?

Whats this spring actually 'compensating' for anyway...

Brian,

What is the camber situation of the rear tires at present?  The compensating spring is a bear to replace.  You will need a good spring compressor with relatively fine claws for this small diameter spring.  If your tires stick out at the bottom I suggest you consider changing spring pads.
