Repro bumper bars
« on: January 10, 2008, 18:38:00 »
I've noticed a few sellers on Ebay that have reproduction front & rear bumpers for sale at reasonable prices. The pics look ok, and they claim that the units are chrome over steel & manufactured in the USA.

Has anyone here bought either front or rear sets from Ebay, and are they any good ?

I bought a set of rear bumpers from one seller for my '66. They looked OK, the part that wrapped around the side of the car had kind of sharp corners instead of being rounded.

But the big problem was that the mounting pad angles didn't work with my brackets. There was no way the bumpers were going to be straight. So I had to send them back. The seller refunded my account right away, so that was cool.

Hi Frank,

I purchased a set of rear guards and also had a similar problem to Paddy Crow but did some minor adjustment to the bumper hangers to fix the problem.
However I also found out that taking the bumpers to a rechromer who also does repair is often the cheaper way as I did with the front bumpers using a company called Vinneys Metal Polishers & Electroplaters 74 Bennet St Dandenong (03) 9794 7530 on the outskirts of Melb who has done all the repair and rechroming on my car.  They do a lot for both country and interstate.  Slow but good.

I think I ended up spending about @250 to do the front bumper and get the dings out.  Total for all the car chrome and aluminum trim repair and replate/polish including grill and door locks complete ended up round $3500.

Cheers
Garry

Thanks for the feedback !

Both of the sellers I am looking at are big powersellers on Ebay with good overall feedback scores

Hi There Garry !

Thanks for the contact. I didn't have any good recommendations for chrome platers here in Sydney. And the prices from those that I did contact were higher than the repro items. Mine haven't got any dings in them, so it may be worth calling Vinneys.

Have a good weekend.

Just installed a set of repop rear bumpers sourced from ebayer "importbaron". About $300 delivered, they are pretty decent for reproduction parts...outside corners sharp instead of rounded, metal is thinner than original and they required shimming to correct a mount angle but once fitted they look really nice. Doing this allowed me to keep the nice originals with overiders and to have both the clean and "american" looks available. Keith

He was one of the sellers I was looking at. The other was FCP Groton.

Glad to hear you are happy with the end result. Thanks for providing the feedback

The ones I returned came from FCP Groten. I'm hoping to make a trip up to Dan's place in the next couple of weeks. It's snowing like crazy today, so it won't be this weekend...
