Can any tell me if any items from any of the sedans for example would fit without need for major surgery as items from these models seem easier to find oe do I need to start sourcing units specific to that model
shell is 230 66
also is their any sort of workshop manual such as haynes or equvilent

bill,
there is a haynes manual,  I think it is for 250 and 280,  you may find one for a 230.

Also, spend 20 bucks and get the mb cd. the cd has all the manuals.

I have a third manual, when I get home I can post the brand.

can I ask why you are interested in what was probably a parts car when you can get  an entire car for 20K?  it will probably still need work but all the parts should be there

you will have nothing but headaches finding parts and piecing together a part car.

for that matter, go to buds benz web site and check out their parts cars.

I believe a 250se or 280se engine, trans, front subframe and rear axle are good substitutes but I think you'd need the driveshaft and aluminium engine mounts from an sl. If the donor car's a manual you'd also need an sl transmission top cover and shifter.

am interested in parts car because it seems to be the better way to go here in the UK
plus I want to geet my hands dirty
As I said I think I may have located a decent shell and am aware that some parts could be difficult to locate hence the question what parts can I mix and match from other models of the same era
There are a couple of specialist breakers here in the UK but they mainly deal in sedans

Hi Bill

It's very easy to blow big money on these cars and I think that to end up with a good one for less than you would spend on a good one in the first place might be a bit of a stretch, and with the summer on it's way I would be tempted to buy one for about £30k that's nice and usable and spend any money you have spare on upgrading bits as you feel fit. You will end up spending so much either way actually.
My car was £15,000 and I must have spent that again over the last few years and it's still a bit of a pig. I'm stuck always hankering after a better car but what do I do? I don't want to sell it, yet I know it's going to cost so much in the future. An engine rebuild £5000, new carpets etc £1000, roof to be done £4000, gearbox rebuild £1500? and it wont stop there. I have a sh!!!ty panzerwagon too. I'm likely to dump it soon.
So, just pause and think about the never ending visits to SLS and Jacksons web sites that lie ahead and maybe look at the better for sale sites. There are many to avoid but some good ones. You might also consider buying in the States, I would . There are some absolute beauties over there for little money. £30k ($60k) will buy you an amazing car. You WILL NOT get that kind of car here.

here are a few of varying values..

by the way, I don't have much good to say about many of the dealers that I know. There are goods ones out there but I'm certainly not making a recommendation to the sellers listed above....phew, have I covered myself? Ha Good luck.
