I finally got around to hooking up the "flash to pass" feature on my U.S. spec 66 230SL last night. It took about 20 minutes. I now have the period original "flash-to-pass" feature as found on Euro-spec Pagodas.
1: Disconnect ground wire from its battery terminal.
2: Remove fuse box cover and two screws holding the fuse block itself to firewall, push fuse block back into the passenger compartment and roll it around until you can see back of block. (Removing the under dash panel will make it easier to access and position the fuse block from below so that you can do steps 3 through 5 from above, through the fuse box slot in the firewall. You'll have to remove the under dash panel anyway to retrieve the fuse panel screw if you drop it!)
3: You will see a white wire with violet stripe folded over and taped to itself and to the white wire with black stripe that is attached to the #10 fuse terminal.
4: Remove tape,
carefully straighten (remember, it has been folded over on itself for 40-odd years!)and strip the end of the white/violet wire, and attach a terminal end with a crimping tool. (
Important: Before crimping, check the terminal end for size to be sure that it fits into one of the empty terminal recesses on the back of the fuse block.)
5: Unscrew the screw securing the white/black wire to terminal #10 (left high beam), add the white/violet wire, and re-tighten the screw, securing both the white/black and white/violet wires to terminal #10.
6: Reposition the fuse block, secure it with the two screws, replace the cover and the under dash panel, and reconnect battery. Pulling back on the turn signal stalk will now allow you to signal with the high beams even when the headlights and/or ignition are off. This is separate from the high beam/low beam function of the foot operated dip switch.
