Old VW car ad
« on: March 17, 2008, 23:07:02 »
Whilst doing a bit of surfing for general Pagoda info, I came across this old VW Karmann Ghia ad which I thought might be of interest to others.

I thought it was interesting how the 4 other cars have similar styling (shovel nosed ans generally rounded) whereas the SL has a more individual look.
Which car would you choose? (rhetorical  ;) )

So I am guessing this is probably a 1970-71 ad? I can identify the K. Ghia, the Jag E, the Pagoda, and the Porsche (911 targa?)... Is the other one a Alfa Romeo or a Fiat?? or something else...

Cool. Thanks Dirk.

It's Italian, but I think it's a Ferrari.

I can't positively make out the car either, but thought it was a Ferrari.....the drive looks like Michael Jackson to me (post bleach period). Does this raise the possiblity of Pagoda time travel?

That's the best little Fiat money can buy — a Ferrari 330 GTS.

The Porsche is pre 69 as identified by the soft rear window.  The SL looks to be 69 or 69 since it has bumper guards but no headreasts.

The ad is for the Karmann Ghia. Or, as someone put it:

When they put a great engine into a VW Beetle chassis they created ... the Porsche 356

Then they put a great body onto a VW chassis/engine and produced ... the Karmann Ghia

Which would you rather drive?!

Let's not forget about the Karmann-bodied BMW 3.0 CS/CSi/CSL. That one looked good and drove well too. (It just had that nasty rust problem....)

My theory about this ad is that the Pagoda driver came across all of these cars broken down on the side of the road. The Pagoda is the only one that actually runs!  :)

Doug,
I too love the E9 BMW 3.0. I even have an 1988 M5 engine in my garage that would drop right in but I can't seem to get involved with another car that rusts. It's like dating the twin sister of the girl that broke your heart. After 18 months and 15k I still have half a car but at least it's a solid half a car.
