Dash crack/seam

When I bought my car, it’s dash was covered in vinyl. I since removed that and wanted to get it painted. I’ve noticed on some cars, like the later 250’s and 280’s that the dash is smooth, with no seems/cracks until the glove box, and others have a crack. My car, 64 230sl has a seam/crack. I assume its supposed to be there? Or should it be smooth? Attached are two pictures one with the crack, one with out. Thanks

Hey 717, nice observation -- yes, it is a seam more than it is a crack...in other words it does belong there. The 230SL essentially has a three panel dash. The middle one (obviously) holds the radio and I think is even called a radio plate.

My understanding is the early dashes (230/early 250)were metal and covered in foam and vinyl/leather.
The later dashes, softer for saftey reasons, were one piece molded and rounded.
