Hello All.
I have just fitted a stainless steel exhaust system to my 230sl and thought that it may interest some to know the outcome and cost, if only as a point of comparison.
The guy who made the exhaust did so entirely by 'hand', faithfully replicating the specs of the original system. He usually manufactures for 'show cars' (hot rods, etc.) and is sufficiently in demand that he doesn't advertise his business at all. The result is a very tidy job, with a sweet sounding note that is a little higher than the old mild steel (and slightly perforated) system, and with just the right amount of 'rasp'in the top half of the rev band.
I was pleasantly surprised at the cost, but would be interested to know if others think it expensive. To dismantle the old, replicate in stainless steel and re-fit cost AUD $1380 inclusive of a 10% government sales tax - that's US$946 or 814 Euro.
For those in this neck of the woods - this is an artisan I am happy to recommend: email me if you want to explore further or get contact details.
Cheers,
kns.
