First drive top down
« on: April 20, 2008, 13:02:54 »
I acquired my 230sl this winter, and have been able to drive it a fair bit with the hardtop on. Today was my first experience with the hard top off and the top down. It is a totally different experience. With out the extra metal the car is livelier and the windnoise blocks out everything but the engine sound. As much as I liked the 230 before, it's even better now!

Jeff--

That's great!  Yes they are 3 different vehicles--and I don't mean 230/250/280SL, but rather top up, top down and hardtop on!

Glad you are happy.  I got a 150 mile drive in yesterday as I woke her up and took her out of storage yesterday--but kept the top up.  I'll take it down later this week for a run.

I too got out for a top down drive yesterday, although not my first of the year.  I had intended to go with the Houston section of the MBCA on the annual "Bluebonnet Run" but found I would not be able to go all day so I made do as best I could and took a one hour drive down the freeway, going 80 down and 70 back.  It really was wonderful.

Sorry you did not make Carl.

We had great fun in and around Brenham, home of Bluebell ice cream.  We also had the top down, with clear skies and 80+ temperature. After lunch at the best Italian restaurant in town we visited Washington on the Brazos for first hand experience of the Texas history.

Unfortunately, we did not have enough time for a tour at the Bluebell Icecream factory.

How true!  A week ago I got to drive all three in one day.  Took my wife to work hardtop on, tried out my newly installed hardtop hoist (and snapped one of the flimsy plastic harness buckles in first time out!) and then went to lunch top down, and later took my bride for an early evening drive during which the two of us stretched out the hibernating top and finished the drive top up.
