different clutch master cylinders?

Does anyone know what the purpose was behind the change in the clutch master cylinders?
I bought a new FAG clutch master cylinder to replace the collapsed/leaking one on my 67 220SL and found that it was not the same as the old one.  The old one I pulled from a 1967 250SL and thought they would be the same.  The 250SL master is sleeved into a large aluminum bracket (W108 #on the side) with a rubber gasket.
The old original one has no sleeve or rubber gasket.  Was this a change to make it quieter or what?
Did do a search and no mention is made on the differences.

Bought a 250/280 clutch master cylinder and it is still the wrong one.
I will simply make do with the one from a W201 series as it is more closely resembles the original 230 series one.
Might this be a freak?  I have no clue to how to remove the master cylinder from the aluminum housing and the rubber gasket holding it in place.  Already removed the circlip and the large washer, but still no go.
Will toss this one into the no good parts bin.

Some useless info:
230/250 SL master cylinders are the same bore (23.81mm) but different part #s. The slave cyl. is the same for both (25.4mm).

280SL m/c is 19.05mm bore and slave 23.81mm

There seems to have been four different types of clutch master cyl in the W113's.
The 230SL started out with 000 295 22 06 and
was superseded by 000 295 24 06; this was done relatively early, say end of 1964. Consisted of adding a bleed valve.
The 250SL got the 000 295 29 06 part. Has aluminium sleeve mount
The 280SL got the 000 295 52 06 cylinder. Different internal diameter as naj noted.
However, it seems that this -52- cylinder will _not_ fit early 280SLs. Haven't found the switch-over chassis No from -29- to -52- yet

MB built approx 50,000 113s.  I doubt two were built the same.  And after 40 years I'm positive no two are the same.  Diversity of the species!  That's part of the mystik!!
