Starter and Flywheel replacement

I need to replace both the starter and flywheel on my 1971 280 SL (Auto.)  Are there recommendations as far as replacement parts for these. I believe in the posts I've read many use a Bosch starter. Part # for a 280SL/Auto? I'm uncertain as to the flywheel.  Original Mercedes part or not?

Bosch sells a reconditioned starter - model number SR 59X - it is good for all Pagoda models. See: http://sl113.com/forums/index.php?topic=5647
Autohaus AZ usually has a good price but it helps to google for the best deal.

Thanks so much. How about the flywheel?  I would assume that our vendors would be the option?  Would that be an original Mercedes part or after market?

that gear should be available.....

I have seen it replaced on a video, It is possible to replace with a drill and some torches to heat up the new ring so it slips ove the fly wheel.

If my memory sreves correctly, the manual shift flywheel has a replaceable ring gear and on the automatic the teeth are machined directly into the flywheel. Not sure on this though, I looked on the Mercedes EPC and can not tell by the illustration.
I used to use a cutting torch to snip off ring gears, if you heat the ring gear to where it is glowing but the flywheel isn't, then hit the trigger, the flame will only cut into the ring gear and it will fall right off.Of course you only get one chance, and your timing must be perfect.
There was also a Po Boy method, heating up the ring gear to where it comes off the flywheel, and flip it over to the back side where the teeth are less worn, I did this a lot on Sprites and Midgets etc when the whole cars where not worth the price of the replacement parts.

If the problem is a worn section of the flywheel gear teeth, you might consider just shifting the gear. My mechanic mentioned to me one time that the engine tends to stop in or near the same place each time so that one section of the flywheel gear gets more use and hence more wear than the rest of the ring. I have not seen this done, or know how easy to do, but as Al said it is at least another point to consider, or ask your mechanic about.

I agree 100% with the mechanic. I used to have a bad spot on my 220D's ring gear. If the motor stopped on that spot I would just roll the car forward a little and pop the clutch to get to a better section. It almost always stopped on the bad section.

You can knock a flywheel ring gear off with a chisel. No heat needed.
 Heat IS needed to put one back on.

Hello,

After removal, try putting the flywheel in the freezer for a few hours, then heat up the ring gear in the oven, maximum temperature for about fifteen minutes.  The ring gear will drop right in place. Be careful that the wife does not catch you messing around in her kitchen!
