engine and transmission leak
« on: May 29, 2008, 02:53:32 »
I am so sick of this.

The engine started to leak 2-3 years ago I decided to fix it.  I took the hood off, radiator off, fan off, pulleys off etc. but I can't pin point exactly where.  Fine! I did all the seals that I can see that are wet, include the front main seal and the two bolts in the head next to the chain sprocket.  The leak has never stopped after I put everything back together. It is even worse than before now. I see a puddle (10-15 drops maybe) in 5 days parked.  It is such a painful process to work the front part of the engine. The worse part is I still don't know which part leaks.

Now the transmission.  Looks like it is somewhere between the engine and transmission but again I am not sure.  I see fluid drops on the button of the transmission pan.

Hi Bob,

Sorry to hear of your woes. You may find some help in this excellent post from The Engineer http://index.php?topic=2360 it certainly helped me a lot. In the end, most of my problems came from the alternator lower mounting plate studs and the large power steering reservoir lower mounting bolt all of which go straight into the engine and require some sealer on the threads. Another often missed source of trouble is the valve cover as leaks are often wrongly attributed. This could well be the cause of what seems like a transmission leak, if your car is an auto the colour of the leakage may give you a clue.

Best of luck
