How to get correct shape for 230SL dash retrim?
« on: July 01, 2008, 06:11:02 »
I'm about to recover my upper & lower dashboard in black MB-Tex. However, the previous owner had it retrimmed with incorrect material and the shape along the edges of the dash are rounded (like the latter 280SL dashboards).

But I am 100% certain that the correct finish for the 230SL dash is the "squared-off" edging.

How is this achieved ? Is the shape a result of the foam padding under the dash material ? Any pointers appreciated. Did the 230SLs actually have foam/padding under the MB-Tex or leather that covered the dashboards ?

Thanks & Rgds

Yes they have a hard foam pad with a squared edge. Let me know if you'd like a photo.

Hi Dave

Thanks for that. If you could email me a photo to franjo4@optusnet.com.au that would be much appreciated.

Any idea if this foam can be bought here in Australia ? Otherwise is it available from places like GAHH, Buds, etc ?

Thanks & Rgds

Hello Frank,
Here's a less-than-ideal photo!
The pad appears to be a strip of dense latex-like foam, dimensions 28 x 10mm, glued to the front of the aluminium dash panel. The top of the dash has a thin layer of lighter, more open textured foam, usually disintegrated to yellow powder by now. I have never seen either padding material sold by parts suppliers. I assume the upholstery shops have their own stock of suitable rubber and foam.

Frank,
here are some pictures of the dash padding.
If you still have the original wood and aluminum frames then you should be able to recreate the shape. The most difficult part will be the curve on the left. You can the see how it looks under the MB-Tex on the right side.
Good luck!
